Viewport, pixel ratio and resolution

A phone with a viewport of 402 by 874 CSS pixels and a pixel ratio of 3 has a screen of 1206 by 2622 physical pixels. Your CSS media queries see the viewport, and images need the pixel ratio to stay sharp.

Why the visible area is smaller

The viewport is the page's room with the browser's toolbars hidden. While they show, the visible area is smaller, and how much depends on the browser. That's why Simlord draws the toolbars of the device's own browser.

What is the most common mobile viewport width?

Most current phones are between 360 and 440 CSS pixels wide in portrait. Testing at 360, 390 to 402 and 430 to 440 covers most of them.

What's the difference between viewport and resolution?

The resolution counts physical pixels, the viewport counts CSS pixels. Divide the resolution by the pixel ratio to get the viewport.

How do I see my site at these sizes?
